La Garde Freinet is located in the heart of the Provence Alps Cote d’Azur area, in the department of the Var. The village of La Garde Freinet, in the heart of the Solid mass of the Moors, overlooks the Mediterranean sea. The Provence at her best. Whoever takes the road which crosses the village to join the peninsula of St Tropez cannot remain insensitive to the beauty of the landscape: steep and wild slopes in north, those soft, covered with chestnuts and vineyards in the south. That natural colours and typical smell of pine woods in the air are so wonderful in the Provence.
The name of the solid mass makes reference to the Moorish or Sarrazines invasions, from Spain and from North Africa during IXth century. According to the tradition, a Sarrazine base was established near La Guard Freinet towards 890. One century later, in 983, Guillaume, Count de Provence would have seized this base.

The earlier constructions of this strengthened village dates back to the XIIth century are still visible at La Garde Freinet. With the end of XIIIth century, the population forsakes fortifications and started gradually building towards the collar, where the village is today. The economy is founded on the exploitation of the forest, hunting and the gathering, which is characteristic of rural Provence. After 1800, the town of La Garde Freinet became an important and prosperous centre of the bouchonnière or cork activity. In 1850, the population of La Garde Freinet grew to about 3000 people, among whom one counts approximately 700 cork cutters. New districts were built. La Garde Guard Freinet benefits great from its surroundings forests with its useful resources such as maritime pines, oaks and chestnuts. Unfortunately the artisanal corking activity that La Garde Freinet thrives on will disappear in due course, predominantly due to the industrialization of the production of corks. La Grade Freinet, like many other rural communities, will loose a (large) proportion of its male population, killed in the First and Second World War. By the end of 1945, the population of the La Garde Freinet is no more then a 1000 inhabitants. Luckily today, the community of La Garde Freinet has grown again to around 1750 permanent inhabitants. Some of the new inhabitants are people from the North of Europe, who have sold their business and home and have moved to a better and more relaxed live in the Provence. La Garde Freinet is also famous for its sweet chestnuts and its chestnut puree. You will also be able to visit many art galleries as La Garde Freinet saw many painters, craftsmen, sculptors and , writers settle here, because of the charm of the place.
