The village of Salernes in the high Var, is famous since the beginning of the 19th century for its production of called red floor tiles. Salernes is originally an agricultural village, producing olive oil, wine, figs, corn, beans and melons. Salernes also had some silk spinning mills, factories of hats and cloths coarse, but all that had to make way at the end of the 18th century. The inhabitants of Salernes started to exploit the richness of the local resources to improve their standard of living and moved away from farming. Tens of small workshops were created in and around Salernes, manufacturing tiles, bricks, pipes, utility pottery, all for sold to the locals. With the expansion of construction work, the orders of floor tiles could hardly be met. The factories of Salernes were feeding the stores of the larger traders located in Toulon, Marseilles and Nice. These wholesalers would export to North Africa, South Africa, Italy and America. The industry of the floor tile knew great periods of glory all along the 19th century.
