The Provence village of Varages is situated in the Var, long known for the quality of its olive oil and for the quality of its tiles. The legend was that this industry goes back to the late 15th century. The story goes that an Italian monk who came from Faenza, met up with Antoine Clérissy, a potter fro the town of Moustiers. The Italian monk showed Antoine Clrissy a way to use the natural resources to produce beautiful pieces of yellow clay pottery, as still manufactured today. Nowadays, the pottery of Varages is known across the globe, as there is a world market for its products. In the shadow of the Varages factory where many local workers bring honour to three hundred years of uninterrupted tradition of Joseph Clrissy school of ceramic decoration, we see craftsmanship blossom, spurred by the Varages Association of Potters. Varages has a registered population of close to 1000 inhabitants on a surface of 3511 hectares.
